Description

A delicious caramelized onion dish with aged Gruyère cheese.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large sweet onions (e.g., Vidalia or Walla Walla), thinly sliced
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 cup aged Gruyère cheese, shredded
  • 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves (or 1 teaspoon dried thyme)
  • 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare your ingredients by slicing the onions thinly.
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter until bubbly.
  3. Add the onions and stir to coat them in butter. Cook for 10-15 minutes until they begin to soften.
  4. Sprinkle in salt, pepper, and thyme. Stir well and continue cooking for another 20-30 minutes on low heat until the onions are deep golden brown and fragrant.
  5. Add balsamic vinegar during the last few minutes of cooking to enhance flavor.
  6. Mix cooked onions with shredded Gruyère cheese in a separate bowl until slightly melted before serving.

Notes

  • This dish pairs well with crusty bread or as a topping for steaks.
  • For a deeper flavor, use a mix of fresh and dried herbs.
