Instructions
- Prepare your ingredients by slicing the onions thinly.
- In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter until bubbly.
- Add the onions and stir to coat them in butter. Cook for 10-15 minutes until they begin to soften.
- Sprinkle in salt, pepper, and thyme. Stir well and continue cooking for another 20-30 minutes on low heat until the onions are deep golden brown and fragrant.
- Add balsamic vinegar during the last few minutes of cooking to enhance flavor.
- Mix cooked onions with shredded Gruyère cheese in a separate bowl until slightly melted before serving.
